The FIA World Council today confirmed the calendar for the 2005 FIA World Rally Championship and Corona Rally México will again run as the third round of the series. The event, which takes place between 11-13 March, will be the first gravel round of the season, following in the footsteps of Monte-Carlo and Sweden.

Today's confirmation sees the FIA World Rally Championship calendar confirmed ahead of the FIA Formula One World Championship dates for the first time in history.

For the first time since its inception, the FIA Junior World Rally Championship (FIA JWRC) will venture outside Europe as the registered contenders are set to compete in Corona Rally México, the only long haul event in its series. In 2005, the FIA JWRC will be contested over eight events, results from seven being counted towards the series title.

The FIA Production Car World Rally Championship, in which Corona Rally México was included in 2004, will also be contested over eight events, but with only six counting towards the series title.

Corona Rally México, in its debut year in the FIA World Rally Championship, has received high acclaim and, after a poll by the factory rally teams and ISC representatives from the JWRC and PWRC, has been voted second overall in the Rally of the Year Awards.

The event, which ran as the third round of the series and the first to the season's new FIA regulations, fought off competition from a host of more experienced rallies in the championship, many of which have run for decades. In particular, the voters praised the Mexican organisation for the facilities provided at the Poliforum, the event's headquarters and service area, and its efficient and prompt response to changing regulations at the start of the season.

We are delighted these influential people hold Corona Rally México in such high esteem, said Patrick Suberville, Event Director. Mexican rallying was virtually unknown to the rest of the world three years ago and to think we have come into the Championship and rocketed into second position from nowhere is quite fantastic for everyone involved. We always said we had more to learn; hopefully next year we can go one step further!

Corona Rally México, round 3 of the 2005 FIA World Rally Championship, will once again be based in Guanajuato, GTO and runs from 10-13 March.
